I love old Rovinj

2 minute walk from my room....with stone paths built along the rocky shore for water access. It's a favorite local swim area.

Wow!! Old Rovinj is one of my favorite places of the entire trip. ..in spite of rain, rain, rain running down the beautiful stone streets free from motor traffic.  It is clean, interesting, historic, and a medieval city that many people live in and work in.  It's small and surrounded by the beautiful clear sea.  The cathedral of Euphemia tops the town and all winding paths lead up to the cathedral or down to the sea.  Remnants of the town walls are everywhere and restaurants have seaside seating and remind me of Buža Bar in Dubrovnik.   

I also visited an ancient castle and walled town near the town of Kanfanar, called Dvigrad (two cities). Much of it is in ruins and covered with vegetation,  but it is now being reclaimed and rebuilt.   They hold concerts there just a few times per summer.  Photos in the next post.

And my guide, Nijo, (Neo) showed me the Lim fjord which is a popular boat excursion from Rovinj.  It was pretty in the rain and is 11 kilometers long. They have many fish traps along there for a certain type of local fish. 

Also interesting is the huge and modern tobacco company complex in the town of Kanfanar.  Nijo says they export tobacco products to many countries (and I say they smoke a lot in other parts of Croatia and in Bosnia and Serbia too).
