A park ranger in Franz Joseph told us about a hike up to an unused tunnel that you can hike through, but you need a headlamp and you wade through water when inside the tunnel. The prize - you can see glowworms up close and personal. They live on the tunnel ceiling!
I'm not a fan of pitch black small spaces or of walking through really cold glacier melt water, but it was too interesting to pass up! The hike up to the tunnel was spectacular, lush rainforest and it was raining slightly all the way. The tunnel through rock was hand dug by 6 men over one year to bring water from one side of the mountain to the other.
We could stand up straight with a foot on each side of us but it was not large. After 10 minutes of walking in ankle deep water, we got to the other side. The tunnel is interesting because of its history but seeing the glowworms with their threads hanging down to catch bugs to eat was so cool!
The next couple of nights we were at Punakaiki, pancake rocks. Our little cabin in the rainforest at Te Nikau retreat outside of the tiny town was really cool.
