Kathleen, Terry, and our guide Peter, at Plitvice national park, our long hiking day. |
We went to 3 national parks of Croatia in 3 days and got in miles of walking and a strenuous 12 mile hike, and it was a nice break from cities, coast, and history.
Krka (kir' ka) is fairly small with a wooden walkway and some beautiful huge waterfalls with the clearest blue-green water lake because it filters through limestone (like Havasu Falls in Arizona!).
Plitvice (plit' vee tsa) is Krka x 25! Hundreds of waterfalls drop into crystal clear blue-green pools for miles and miles of walkway. It's unbelievably stunning for 6 miles of walking (with 1000's of other tourists).
Paklenica (pa klen ee' tsa) is a steep cut passage thru a mountain range and a climber's paradise. We hiked up an old Roman trade route from the sea over the mountain pass and down again. The road follows a river which was dry now in the fall, but it was awesome even without water flowing.
Before now we spent one night in Split on the coast, but we'll be there again. Then 2 nights in Zadar on the coast, and tonight we arrived inland to Zagreb for 2 nights. So far, an excellent adventure!
