Western Australia at Perth

We flew 5 hours from Sydney in New South Wales  to the region called Western Australia and the largest city, Perth.  Perth is on the Swan River which is so huge that we assumed it was a bay!  We rented bikes and rode from the downtown along a bike path to Kings park,  which is larger than Central Park in NY.  It has awesome views of the river, marinas, the ferries, and includes botanical garden and beautiful monuments.

In the evening a few of us took a train to a town on the coast,  Fremantle or Freo.  It is the oldest port in Western Australia and Kit read about it in Lonely Planet and suggested we check it out.   The architecture reminded us of New Orleans and the small wharf area includes waterfront restaurants.

We ate at a huge brewery called Little Creatures that was packed with people.   I enjoyed their hard apple cider and nachos!  the town was very quiet by the time we caught the 10:00 train back to Perth. What a great adventure we had!

We did two long hikes along the coast from Smith's beach near Dunsborough.  And I had my first dip in the Indian Ocean!
